History
Built in 1555, Wood Street Compter in Mitre Court used to be a small prison that served as a debtors or general misdemeanours prison which in its time housed some famous prisoners such as Captain George Orrell, Catholic martyr George Napper, the poet Edmund Gayton and the highwayman James Hind. Severely damaged in the Great Fire of London in 1666, the prison was eventually demolished in 1816 but the cellar has survived although in poor condition.
Paranormal Activity
Until recently the Four Vintners Off-Licence in Mitre Court leased the old cellar and used it for wine tasting evenings. In 1986 one assistant working late in the cellar talked of how she was violently pushed from behind but no one was there. Although the area is now padlocked and gated with access forbidden, people walking past late at night have often felt the feeling of being watched from the darkness below, whispers have also been heard from behind the locked door at the bottom of the steps.
