History
This old pub in the centre of Bristol was built in 1664 and was once partially destroyed by a bomb in the Second World War but three of the original five projecting gables have remained. Tradition has it that Daniel Defoe met Alexander Selkirk (Robinson Crusoe) here. The pub is also believed to be the inspiration for the Admiral Benbow in Treasure Island.
During the Victorian era the pub was associated with the Theatre Royal across the road and was visited by many performers and musicians.
The pub now remains a grade II listed building and is reputed to have underground passages which smugglers once used.
Paranormal Activity
This old Bristol pub is alleged to have at least 15 ghosts. The most famous story haunting this building is that of a young boy who wore leg braces when he was alive. It is said his footsteps can be heard on the staircase and in the attic during the middle of the night.
