The Greyhound

76 Friar Gate
Derby DE1 1FN
Derbyshire
The Greyhound

History

The Greyhound dates back to 1734 and is at the heart of the “Derby Mile” pub-crawl of which several pubs have been lost over recent years. It is one of the few pubs that has kept its original name and once had the regular Derby ‘beast’ market held on the wide thoroughfare at the front.

During the Second World War the pub only had two main rooms, the smoke room and the tap room and the owners would live at the back of the pub.

Sadly four years ago the pub closed due to the recession but has recently re-opened on the 20th May 2010.

Paranormal Activity

Condemned men were once brought to this pub from the nearby jail for a last pint before they were to be hanged. It is believed that these condemned men now haunt the old building.

Derby City General Hospital

Derby
Derbyshire
Derby City General Hospital

History

Originally built on the site of the old building.

Paranormal Activity

Staff have often reported sightings of a black-clad figure stalking the corridors. Bosses are so concerned about the staff report’s that they have asked a priest to come in and perform an exorcism.

A visitor to the hospital in the 70’s gives this report; “The old hospital had a tower and as we were leaving we all saw a dark cloaked figure walking past a window clasping a candle. We thought nothing more of it until we went in again the following day. We could see the spot where we saw the figure... only the tower had no windows — end of story. We witnessed the same ghost they are seeing today. It was the most unnerving thing that has ever happened to me. I know what I saw that night was not a figment of my imagination. He was cloaked in black from head to foot clasping a candle — it was bone chilling. I believe ghosts linger for years and I’m certain I saw the same one still haunting that place today.”

Some locals and experts believe the spectre to be that of a Roman soldier that was killed on the site in ancient times.

Derby Fish Market

Derby
Derby Fish Market

History

What is now Derby’s fish market was once home to a Victorian police station and cells and was once visited by a villain named Gerald Mannering. The villain was arrested in 1879 in Derby for being drunk and disorderly and driving a pony and trap, some believing he was trying to drown his sorrows in bitterness and alcohol after an argument with his father.

Dragged to the cells, crazed and drunk, he drew a pistol in the charge room and began firing wildly, injuring one inspector and killing a PC Moss. Amazingly Gerald escaped the death sentence due to the jury being undecided as to whether it was murder or manslaughter and the casting votes worked in his favour.

Paranormal Activity

Some say the ghost of PC Moss stills walks the now fish market, angered by the injustice of his death. Many workers at the fish market have seen a policeman dressed in Victorian uniform who watches them. Strange footsteps can also be heard patrolling the yard.
