Paranormal Activity
This old pub and village in general is home to many spooky goings on. Phantom black dogs and a man in black are just a few of the sightings near to this building. The man in black, who wears black leather boots and coat with a wide-brimmed hat is said to stagger along the High Street towards the Prince of Wales pub, vanishing as he reaches the pub. Witnesses who have reported seeing the man in black say he ‘swaggers along’ and looks like a highwayman or a Cavalier soldier.
Alan Packman, who has been the landlord at the Prince of Wales pub for over 19 years, said he has heard strange noises in the pub and has heard of the legend of the man in black. “During the night the downstairs toilet door opens and closes when there is noone around. A number of customers have also seen a Cavalier walking into the pub - it’s not just customers but people walking down the road. I haven’t seen anything but I have heard the door going often enough.”

The Mermaid Inn
Christian Malford Chippenham Wiltshire SN15 4BE
|
|
History
Originally a farmhouse, the Mermaid Inn was once part of the Meux Estate, incorporating part of a much older building from around 1400 AD. The construction of a nearby bridge in 1785 had a significant effect on the Mermaid and was converted into a coaching inn.
Originally run by the Newman family for over forty years, the transfer of the licence from a thatched inn was around 1870 but sadly the building was destroyed by fire in 1903 but was rebuilt and an extension was built to the public bar in 1954. In January 1980 another fire destroyed the stables, which resulted in the construction of an extension to the lounge bar.
Paranormal Activity
It is said that this old coaching inn is haunted by a young girl of about seven years old. Investigators to the building have reported seeing strange figures and flashing lights as well as hearing the sound of footsteps, dog chains rattling and unexplained dragging sounds as if someone is dragging a bag of bricks.
