Paranormal Activity
Staff have often reported sightings of a black-clad figure stalking the corridors. Bosses are so concerned about the staff report’s that they have asked a priest to come in and perform an exorcism.
A visitor to the hospital in the 70’s gives this report; “The old hospital had a tower and as we were leaving we all saw a dark cloaked figure walking past a window clasping a candle. We thought nothing more of it until we went in again the following day. We could see the spot where we saw the figure... only the tower had no windows — end of story. We witnessed the same ghost they are seeing today. It was the most unnerving thing that has ever happened to me. I know what I saw that night was not a figment of my imagination. He was cloaked in black from head to foot clasping a candle — it was bone chilling. I believe ghosts linger for years and I’m certain I saw the same one still haunting that place today.”
Some locals and experts believe the spectre to be that of a Roman soldier that was killed on the site in ancient times.

Penfound Manor

|
History
Penfound Manor was originally a Saxon dwelling owned by William the Conqueror and was given to his half-brother, Robert the Count of Mortain. The Manor is reputed to be the oldest inhabited manor house in England and is still privately owned by the Penfound family who took their name from the manor when they moved in during the 12th Century. Originally built around the core of a medieval hall the house is not currently open to the public.
Paranormal Activity
The Manor is said to be haunted by the spirit of a broken hearted Penfound family member called Kate who died during the Civil War. Kate’s father was a Royalist who hated Parliamentarians but she is said to have fallen in love with the son of a Parliamentarian, John Trebarfoot. Deciding to elope with her love, Kate was caught by her father and a fight broke out. John was killed and both her and her father were fatally wounded. It is said Kate now returns to the house in search of her lost love on the anniversary of their deaths, the 26th April.
